Steaua will not be easy opponents for Manchester City
On Tuesday night, Manchester City faces Steaua Bucharest in the Champions League play-off to make it to the group stages of the competition. The trip to the Romanian champions may prove a tricky one for the Citizens.
In terms of money spend and quality of squad Steaua and City are not even in the same league. However, trips to Eastern European countries have proven difficult for English clubs in the past. The standard of pitch and the facilities are not what the pampered Premier League players are accustomed to.
Steaua pulled off a slight shock in the last round by seeing off Czech side Sparta Prague 3-2 on aggregate. City will represent an even bigger challenge though.
The Romanian side will be a an unknown quantity to the City players, but boss Pep Guardiola is not one for neglecting details and will probably be well versed in their tactics, their team line-up and how they are likely to play.
A trip to Romania is not exactly an ideal one for City, who kicked off their Premier League campaign with a 2-1 defeat of Sunderland on Saturday evening.
Guardiola pulled off a surprise in his team selection against City by naming Willy Caballero in goal, instead of long-term number one Joe Hart. The England number one is in the 21-man party travelling to Bucharest, but Ivorian central midfielder Yaya Toure has been omitted from the squad.
Manchester City are unlikely to find this first leg tie against Steaua easy, but it would highly surprising if Guardiola’s side does not emerge with a victory from their tricky trip.
