Manchester City cannot afford slip-up against Arsenal

Manchester City hosts Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday in one of the biggest Premier League games of the weekend.

The clash is vital as both teams will want to finish in the top-three of the table and guarantee a place in next season Champions League group stages. Arsenal are currently third-place and three points ahead of fourth-place City.

However, not only are Manuel Pellegrini’s City competing for third-place, but are also staving off the challenge of arch-rivals Manchester United below them. The Citizens were expected to challenge for the Premier League title this season, but that challenge ended a good while ago.

Now their main focus remains staying in those top-four positions and sealing a place in Europe’s elite competition for next season.

City really cannot afford to lose against Arsenal, as chasers United also have a game in-hand. A defeat against the Gunners and the Red Devils could easily catch the Citizens this season.

The Citizens will need to recover quickly from their rather lacklustre Champions League semi-final exit against Real Madrid last time out to win this clash. City’s form in the Premier League has been decent with five wins in their last seven outings, but Pellegrini’s side suffered a 4-2 defeat Southampton last time out.

The prospect of missing out on the Champions League for next season is an unthinkable one for City and their fans. Highly-esteemed boss Pep Guardiola is taking over as the teams new boss this summer and City fans will be hoping that the Citizens can secure a top-four finish this season and move forward under the Catalan boss next season.
